Sunday, July 24, 2016, 3:02:36 PM- New Project
No process pics in this blog.
I was asked to make this by my ex-wife. Her brother always liked my art and my craft.....even tho the 2 of us really didn't care that much for each other lol.... and he passed away at a very young age.
This is for his cremains. Made of oak, walnut(top and pegs) ,maple and ebony(handle). Took an entire day. I got into kind of a zen zone and before I knew it it was done and it was late in the day.
I seen how much these things go for at a normal going rate. Might need to add these to my list of things to offer.
Either way.... I hope they like it and I mean the most respect to him even tho we were not the best buds.
Hope you all like.

"This is fantastic! Not only is the craftsmanship excellent, I love the idea of making a final resting place for someone you know."

What I like about being a maker is I can take ordinary material and in a very short time make it into an heirloom..... Makes me smile when it comes out right.
Started out as an ordinary pile of cherry and maple.

They then became in one day these....
These are Shaker boxes. The bodies are made of 1/16th inch thick cherry wood. The tops are made of 1/4 inch thick birdseye maple.

Thanks for looking .

The finished project.....

This is a close up of the knuckles after the initial cutting..

Then I have to saw down the middle of the board. Cut all the way down to where the knuckles are located.

This is a long process.... and this is what it looks like LOL

Then I CAREFULLY open it up... incase it isn't all completely detached in the middle.

Now comes getting the thing dressed up . A lot of sanding and board prep. But this is laying out decration for the "feet"

Before / After

OK this probably doesn't surprise anyone... but I do make my own furniture wax . All natural ingredients.

And this is what it looks like. This is called a Roubo Bookstand. Perfected by Andre Roubo . An incredible person from a couple hundred years ago.

And a picture of it on my dresser. Next to a box I made and a clock lol. With a book resting on it!

ANd for those that can't quite figure out how this thing works. Here is a video of me showing it a bit....

Thanks for following along. Hope everyone enjoyed the process.

WTF is guit making this time?

Starting out with a piece of Ambrosia Maple. It is a maple that had during its life an insect infected it and it shielded itself from it by forming a protective barrier around it . Quite a common thing that happens. Later when cut the area that was isolated inside the tree has formed a beautiful color. No harm was done from it to the tree. You can see the small burrows from the bug still. It all adds up to a beautiful character in the wood...... Well enough of my high ended descriptions.

This side of the board is rough cut and needs refining.

Ahh much better.... using a hand plane and shaving off thin slices to get it right. Kinda looks like bacon huh lol

Well after a short bit of work the board is now square. That is essential to make the project come out correctly.

Laying out the first pattern for the project. Careful measuring is needed.

Now....... Finally....... time to take the tool to the wood(so to speak.....got to keep it in NN fashion lol)

More pics to follow later today..........

Made from an old piece of driftwood. Woodburned. Then used beeswax to enhance and seal the picture.

Shown displayed on some old mannequin that I found.

Sunday, February 14, 2016, 4:58:44 PM- A couple new projects
Turned a bowl on my lathe. Made from red oak and southern yellow pine. First bowl I have turned on my lathe.

These are "meditation" necklaces... or Prayer necklaces.Made from Bethlehem Olive Wood. The wood may well be near 2,000 years old from the town of Bethlehem Israel. They are worn and in moments of meditation or the need to pray you rub them quietly to one's self.

LOL..... This is an actual poster from the McCarthy era of politics. Can you believe this? I wonder if any of the latest group of morons will reissue this for their campaigns? .......... to be honest it wouldn't surprise me.
