It was George Martin who signed the Beatles to a recording contract. GM was already an accomplished producer at the time and then went on to produce the Beatles catalogue (apart from Let it Be).
It is impossible for me to imagine modern music without his influence. Time to dig out Revolver, Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper and the White Album. Check out the "Produced by George Martin" doco.
