Wednesday, August 28, 2013, 7:24:32 PM- I have a Dream...
Hi all

Today is the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jrs speech which is more widely known as "I have a dream" speech. From his speech delivered at Washington DC in 1963, the most famous passage reads as follows.

"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.

It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.'

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today."

In a time of racial segregation, one man shared his dream of basic equality. He hoped that his children would one day, not be judgement on the colour of their skin, but by their character. And this would be true of all people regardless of past events.

It's a true shame that 50 years on this dream is yet to be truly fulfilled around the world but it's a dream worth believing in, worth striving for and worth making a reality.

What made this dream more desirable and most appealing to me is that this is a dream that can be achieved simply via education. Not through war or conflict or bloodshed. A simple basic education could eliminate all forms of discrimination and not just racial, but religious, class and sexual segregation and discrimination.

Following on from Martin Luther King Jrs speech is one made by a personal inspiration of mine. The Dalai Lama. This is his dream that this century humanity will finally find peace. No through pray or religion, but thorough education.

Martin Luther King Jr and the Dalai Lama. Both great inspirations and heroes to me.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 7:45:38 PM- "The weather is like the government, always in the wrong" ~ Jerome K. Jerome
Hi all

Well it's absolutely roasting here in the gold UK. Hottest today but to be honest the past week or two have been ridiculously hot, especially to go to work in in a shirt and tie. It's been about 32C (89.6F) in some places. I know some of you may scoff at that but for the uk, it's chuffing warm!

I'm not a summer or heat person at the best of times. I prefer winter and i prefer the cold. Why? Well for a start it's far easier to warm up and stay warm than it is to cool down and stay cool.

Plus sweating while at work or just sitting down or even trying to sleep isn't very nice. And on a more mushy note, it is nice to warm up by snuggling next to somebody. When you're hot and clammy the last thing you want is body contact....ish!

Even sleeping on top of my bed in nothing but my boxers isn't resulting in my cooling off.

So yeah, not enjoying the hot weather one bit!!

Secondly my most recent audition for a play didn't go well. Basically i didn't get the part i wanted mainly because i was too young. I thought my audition was rubbish but a mate who was sitting in on the audition panel and reading in said i had a strong audition and everybody who had been cast was at least 10 years older than me.

With that i'm sorta alight with the outcome but this season doesn't really have a lot of plays that interest me or grab my attention so what i do go for i want a part in otherwise it's a long wait. At the moment the next i'm interested in isn't on until February next so, so auditions won't happen until November/December at the earliest.

That's a pretty long wait! But wait i must, or I go for a part/play i'm not rally interested in for the sake of acting in something this year. It's not only that but i have to use leave so i can get the time off work so it's not like i can go for anything and everything.

So sweating my ass off a long wait until next audition...joy!

Tuesday, July 9, 2013, 3:47:12 PM- “The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person.” ~ Chuck Palahniuk

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.

But it's time to face the truth,

I will never be with you....

Hi All

One lesson I've learnt this weekend. Don't mix wine and whiskey (not in the same glass obviously, just don't drink one after the other).

I've been quite ill today, especially as i didn't really have anything to eat until the BBQ in the afternoon and by then I'd already had 2 glasses of wine.

On the plus side i still have my 100% win record when it comes to playing chess against the family.

P.S.
I WANT this chess set! (not a great picture but it's Alien Vs Predator)

Friday, July 5, 2013, 7:43:37 PM- I've got all the money I'll ever need, if I die by four o'clock...
Hi all

Well my car is back in the garage. I had trouble with the radiator which caused it to over heat. I took in first time and after a day and a few flushes of the radiator it was sorted.

A drive to and from Scotland two weeks ago (about 660 miles) and it's started over heating again. I took it back in on Tuesday and I though after a day it would be sorted.

It's now Friday and several phone calls later and they are still no closer in either finding out what is causing the car to overheat and how to fix it.

While i'm looking forward to getting my car back, i'm not looking forward to getting the bill for this little holiday my car is taking!

Thursday, July 4, 2013, 10:04:24 PM- The time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself ~ Doug Coupland
Hi all

Recently at work it appears that I'm a bit of social pariah purely because I'm in my 30s and single. This, in their eyes, warrants sympathy and phrases like "you'll find somebody" and "it's only a matter of time".

It came about due to somebody who I worked with commented that I never mention my girlfriend after a group of us had a long conversation regarding partners, marriage, etc (I didn't contribute a great deal to this conversation!)

When I said "that's because I'm single" she asked how old I was. When I said 31 it started the sympathy of her saying "I'm so sorry" and doing that shock gesture when their mouth gapes open which they cover with their hand.

She then mentioned it to somebody else who was involved in the previous conversation and she remarked "I know we'll have to find him somebody". Them two along with somebody else then started talking about who was single at work and who they could "set me up with". The first person they mentioned was the person I mentioned in my early blog, the one I'm kinda in love with.

For a split second I was really tempted to let them try, for them to test the waters for me but I quickly said that I think she was already with somebody. I'm not sure if that's true or not, I just didn't want them saying anything to her for many, many reasons.

But the thing I found really interesting was not the reaction when they found out I was single, which is something I don't try to hide or avoid talking about, it was my age coupled with the fact I'm single and their reaction to finding that out.

Am I an oddity because I'm single paired with my age?

In some respects I can see their point of view. Most of my mates from college are married or engaged. I have a list of weddings coming up for various friends over the next year. Statistically I'm "not normal". But even if you take marriage out of the equation I can only name a few of my friends who are the same age or older and single.

But is it an out dated view that once you reach a certain age you should be with somebody or is it something that's seen as a "natural" part of life?

I don't know and at first I didn't care. I just found the reactions interesting.

But after a while thinking about it, I did start to pick at myself in the usual way I do when I start to really think about things.

Asking if I was single because I want to be and past experiences have left me with the view that it's not worth it and I should keep people at arm's length. Never letting anybody get close, never letting them see me for me.

Or is it because nobody actually wants me and even if I didn't hold the aforementioned views, I'd still be single. I have been single for a long time and it did, and now again does, get me down. Maybe that is why they show sympathy?

I pretend it's the former, but if I'm being honest it's probably the latter...
