Today is St George's Day, the patron saint of England and several other places.

It disappoints me a little to see that people just don't seem to celebrate St George's Day like they do other saint's days. Today should be about celebrating, having fun and in this country at least, celebrating your Englishness.

It's a shame that more people don't embrace St George's Day like they celebrate St Patrick's Day, you'd be amazed just how many English people go out and drink and have fun on St Patrick's Day and do nothing for St George.

So people of NN, I urge you, celebrate St George today, have a cup of tea and a slice of cake or go to the pub and drink a few ales, whatever you do, have fun!

A few weeks ago I met a girl on a dating website and to my complete surprise she replied to me and we really hit it off. We swapped a few messages and I gave her my number.

Since she's had my telephone number we have been sending each other messages throughout the day, every day, everything seemed to be going very well. Even when I was on holiday in Las Vegas we were in constant contact.

I met her for the first time about three weeks ago, she was working at comic con on her father's stand. We had a good chat and spent a little time together and had already arranged to go on a date together a couple of days later. She has a three year old son so is only available every other weekend and Sunday and Monday evenings each week.

Unfortunately, the date got cancelled as her ex brought her son home a day early due to problems with his family. We rescheduled for the following Saturday. It was a lunch date as she had other commitments on the evening. The date went really well, we both enjoyed ourselves and as we parted at the train station she said, "See you soon, next time it'll be my treat"

Wednesday this week she was trying to arrange to see me again today (Saturday) but was struggling because she'd arranged something for the afternoon several weeks ago and had work commitments on the morning. The following day she sent me a message to say that she wasn't going to be able to meet me due to work and she didn't think that it was going to work romantically.

To say I was shocked was an understatement! We really did hit it off, we have lots of things in common, similar interests, she has told me that nobody has ever made her laugh as much as I do and that she thinks I'm a good looking guy with an amazing smile. She has said I'm ace, awesome and far too good to be single, there's not a thing that she'd change about me, she just doesn't think there's a connection. Bear in mind we've only actually met twice so haven't had a chance to build on that.

I have thanked her for being honest and promised to remain friends with her because we really do get on so well. I have asked her to go with me to a fairly local theme park purely as friends and not as a date. She has said she'd really like to do that and hopefully it'll happen quite soon. We're still in touch with each other as much as ever but I have backed off with the compliments a little.

Now, she's only split from a boyfriend of 2 - 3 years a couple of months ago, has had a couple of shitty experiences with dates and men in between her ex and myself, is busy with work, studying for a further qualification and heading out to Australia for a couple of weeks in a couple of months.

So good people of NN, do you think that if I continue to build a strong friendship with this girl, it may grow in to a relationship, it's just the timing that's wrong right now or do you think I'd be better just giving up and moving on?

I think maybe I was a touch too keen following on from the date but I couldn't help it as I was so excited to meet someone that seemed so right for me. I spent the first part of 2014 discussing with a lesbian friend (not sure if that's relevant, I'm a little drunk)of mine why American girls are far more interested in me than English girls are.

She wanted to know whether it was just American girls or whether it was girls from overseas in general.

Having travelled to various European destinations and getting some attention, but nothing like the amount of positive attention that I've received in America, I can only conclude that American girls like us English guys.

The next question raised was "is it that the girls you're talking to are just interested in your money or are paid to be interested in you"

My response to that was that I have friend in both New York and Las Vegas and that my friends are both male and female. One of my friends in Vegas is the husband of one of the cleaners in the hotel where I stay, so I would hope in at least that case, my friendship doesn't relate to money. Based on that example, I would hope that the same rationale would extend to at least some of the girls I know.

My friend then asked me whether I thought that my English accent was what the American girls liked.

I do think that the accent helps, and certainly is a good ice breaker but I feel that the fact that I show an interest in the girls that I talk to and that I ask questions about their lives goes a long way. Rather than just treat them as a waitress, a bar tender or a shop assistant, I engage them in conversation and treat them as equals, show an interest in their lives and yes, I flirt. This seems to go down well in America and the girls that I meet seem to like it.

I behave the same way locally and treat everyone I meet with respect and yet I don't seem to get any interest from the local girls.

Do you think that perhaps I need a different approach with English girls to American girls or do you think that maybe the accent initially gets the American girls to take notice? Do you think there is a difference between what American girls and English girls want from a man?

My friend that I had this conversation with did conclude that maybe it was because the girls that I interact with in America are generally treated with a minimal amount of respect so when someone shows a little interest in them, they appreciate it that much more. She also commented on the fact that I was very nice and talked to her as an equal rather than talking to her boobs.

I've kind of wandered off topic at this point but never mind. I'd be interested to hear your views.

You'd think living on an island, this would be a relatively easy challenge for me to participate in.
