"Amber, I'm not the 911 in your relationship and I'm afraid that that big son of a bitch would turn on me if he knew you were calling me," Tank responded not just a little bit afraid. "Tank my ex-boyfriend wired me money to find a motel for a few days to let this prick cool off. Just come get me, take me to find a motel where I can hide, then I can get to Key West and in a couple of days find a place to stay on craigslist. My ex will help me, please". Amber pleaded.
"He still has your phone hooked up to a GPS so he'll know where I take you Amber. He'll find you." Tank muttered. "I will shut the phone off when we when we leave, and just bring stuff in my big purse for a couple of nights. I can come get the rest of my stuff when he goes out night fishing. I gotta get out of here. He's beat me too many times, I'm done." Amber was crying now "Please tank, please, I'll do anything you want, please."
Tank picked Amber up a block from the apartment, nearby was a Western Union pickup office where they retrieved $200. More than enough for a couple of room nights to let things cool off, then get back to Key West and start over. It wasn't going to be easy.
Tank drove to Big Pine Key where there were several low-end motels left over from the 50s. One after the other they stopped, only to find them full for the rest of the weekend. If they went south to Key West the only other motel was a Sugarloaf Motel, another remnant of the 60s. A call found it to be too expensive so the only alternative was to go back through Marathon and go north. The choices then got really scarce, only Grassy Key had two places with rooms available. The first one was next to a bar and restaurant, but really out in the middle of nowhere. They really had run out of choices.
Amber went into the office where a lady was about to close up." Hi, do you have a room for a couple of nights till I can get back to Key West. I had problems at home and I need to get away for a while." Amber asked, trying to put on an honest face.
"Honey, we have one room left but it's not the best, that's why it's the only one left, I don't really like to rent it." She made a solemn face. "How much, I'm really tired and my ride has to get back to Key Largo tonight." Amber was nervous. " $150 a night, all the other rooms are $200." She replied. Amber's heart sank," I only have $200 to my name, and no credit cards, please help me out". "No visitors, no complaints, show me your ID." She demanded. "Pay ahead, in cash."
Amber pulled out those precious four $50's and reluctantly laid them on the counter.
"Come on tank, let's check out the room, the one nobody wants ."Amber ordered "And bring my bag and the suitcase too, I'll get the lights and the AC on. I gotta pee first." Amber headed to the small tile bathroom and turned on the light and fan. The bathroom had cracks in the walls and was missing tiles in the shower stall. The stains on the ceiling looked like they were still damp from the recent tropical rains. The bare lightbulb was spaghetti twisted energy saver. Dim, really dim. " This place is a dump
Tank," raising her voice to be heard in the other room " did you get my stuff out of the truck? She finished peeing, wiped and flushed the toilet, the handle didn't work. She grave up wiggling it and got up to wash her hands. The leaking faucet in the copper colored stained sink had been leaking for a long time. "This must be the room they rent out by the hour. What a fucking dump."
When she walked into the main room, Tank was laying back"
