I undertook a pilgrimage trip into Washington, D.C., last night to pay my respects to former President, Gerald R. Ford. I don't know why I had this need as I didn't journey into D.C. when former President Reagan passed away. I really don't remember former President Ford when he was in the White House as I was 13 - 16 years old back then. I do remember the civics lessons imposed on the schools as Ford was the first person to be appointed to the vice presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment and upon succession to the presidency, Ford became the only person to hold that office without having been elected either President or Vice President!

As I walked towards the Capitol Rotunda, last night, my thoughts were about how this man, who was given such a bum rap in his career, accepted his role and in the end, came out on top. Ford assumed a thankless job, succeeding Richard Nixon in the wake of Watergate. Prior to this his vice presidency came in the wake of Spiro Agnew's humiliating resignation.

Inside the Capitol Rotunda I was awed by the sight laid out before me. The military guards all straight and tall, the vastness of space in the rotunda; but what struck me most of all, was the silence. My thoughts again turned to the person I came to respect... Ford may or may not have been the ideal person for the job considering the state of the nation at the time. But he did his best. He served his country in WWII and many years in the Congress. And by all accounts he was a really nice guy. He will probably never be ranked in the top ten (or even top thirty) list of past Presidents. But to the people who knew him, he'd rank way up there as a husband, a father, a friend and an American.

R.I.P. President Gerald R. Ford. You will be missed, always!
