kotek001's blog post - The essence of creation

Friday, October 24, 2008, 1:29:37 AM
My first thought about the photo posted here as "A moment of fall wistfulness" was "F***, this is exactly what it's all about. I could sacrifice 10 or more pics just for this one photo." I could sacrifice 20 average pics, maybe even more, and even if that would mean some days without new photos.

I guess you've heard about the Pareto rule. It has some interesting implications for creative activities. When somebody produces content -- be it literature, music, photos or whatever -- its value follows a specific pattern. There is a small part of it that has great value and great part that has relatively little value. The best thing a content producer can do is find that small part of their most valuable works and focus on it. Other works are also necessary, but it is that specific part that can make you accomplished. It's absolutely normal that it comprises just a small percentage of one's works. But it is the essence of creation and should be taken care of appropriately.
