The number of guests on NN ("NN Vital Stats" on the main page) last Saturday morning (UTC) differed somewhat from its typical level. Exceeding 11000, it was like 10000 users more than usual. What was it? Really that many users? Was the number shown wrong? Or was it a nasty robot leeching pics? My guess: a bot. Check the forum and see how much attention is given there to pics stealing. Let's look at something else: popularity of pics. As explained in its definition it is calculated by "calculating the number of times a photo has been viewed divided by the number of days the photo has been on the site." OK, let's check my own pics, 3 examples: (1) "Field inspector at work": 369 views in 7 days (2) "Inhaling solar power...": 302 views in 11 days (3) "A June evening...": 475 views in 32 days Now let's do the math. We need to divide the number of views by number of days. We get: (1) 369/7 = 52.7, NN says: 66 views/day (2) 302/11 = 27.5, NN says: 43 views/day (3) 475/32 = 14.8, NN says: 61 views/day Well, looks like something strange is happening here. I've just reported this problem on the forum. |
