Thursday, July 28, 2016, 10:56:34 PM

Ive just started the second season of Born this way . This is a series on the A&E network. It is about a group of young adults with downs syndrome . I have worked with people with developmental disabilities for over 11 years and absolutely love my job.
So many times my clients get stared at ,whispered about and teased it drives me nuts . When I'm with them and this happens i turn Mama bear protective ! its unbelievable how ignorant people can be just because someone looks different ,sounds different or has an extra chromosome . anyhooooo i cry through each episode and think its a great show. Check it out

I've known a few of these wonderful folks over the years and have found them to be the most inquisitive, caring, kind, and loving of all the people I have met. Bless you, both for the work you do and for the protection you give them :) xxx

There is a hot debate going on in my neck of the woods right now. A stand-up comic had included for several years in his routine a number of jokes about a teenager (19 now) with Treacher Collins syndrome. Laughing at him, calling him ugly and getting cheap laughs from his audience. Appalling, but true. But the mother and the young man filed a complaint with the human rights commission, and the tribunal ordered the comedian to pay the young man 35 000$, and his mother 7000$. This sparked an outrage in the artistic milieu as many comedians and writers feel they should have the right to make jokes about anyone, anytime. The whole freedom of speech thing. They claim to have the right to mock the physical appearance of politicians for example, it goes with the territory they say, so why not others. And they fear that this judgement will create a dangerous precedent. The stand-up comic who got sued is usually quite vulgar in his interviews, and general approach. Very arrogant. It is the style he chose. Some like that. The kid with Treacher Collins syndrome, on the other hand, expresses himself elegantly, remains calm and takes the high road. Now, the comedian says he will appeal the decision, and go all the way to Supreme court if need be. I hope what happens is that the stand-up comic will get his ass kicked all the way if he follows that route. I was reading in some article today that Earth is a tough school, where we need to learn to be good to each other. Well, both the comic and the kid are teachers in this case, if we choose to pay attention.

Thanks to my wife being in the same field as long as I have known her. I have gotten to appreciate the many different abilities of people. I always enjoy hanging out with her at work functions and talking with the the amazing people she works with/for. It always adds perspective to my life. more importantly it taught our daughter to be the most compassionate person that treats everyone like friends regardless of ability. That is what I am truly proud of.

Never heard of this show, Kimmie. I'll look into it. TFS. Mitch, I hadn't heard about this comic before. :( I wasn't familiar with Treacher Collins syndrome so thank you for sharing that info.

I think mocking the physical appearance of anyone is beyond the pale. It's not funny when it's done about politicians either. I can understand caricatures to a certain extent but otherwise...? Do we choose our genetic makeup?! People need a clue.
