Today, 50 years ago, I woke on my 8th birthday to the news that President Kennedy had been assassinated. It is not my earliest recollection but my earliest of an historic world event. 50 years later as I look back to that day I can still recall the shock and sadness at the news in Australia. Like so many of my generation, now the elderly, I have been interested in the events of that day ever since. Was there a conspiracy? Did Oswald act alone, or at all? I don't know however there seems to be lots of questions that will never be properly answered. I know one thing for sure. The music was so much better! The Beatles. Hermans Hermits. Gerry and the pacemakers. Mommas and Pappas. The Beach Boys. Bob Dylan. Georgie Fame. Duane Eddy. I was going to suggest that you could understand the words, however perhaps not with songs like Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen. Simpler times in many ways and yet tumultuous times. |
