A solution to the rising prison population and dwindling energy reserves.

Instead of sending people to prison for months or years they should be sentenced to miles on an exercise bike. The bike would be connected to the national grid to generate electricity.

If someone steals a mobile phone they're sentenced to 1,000 miles.

If they rob a bank it's 50,000 miles.

Or is cycling too good for them?

That is a really great idea.

The kids Science Museum locally has a bike connected to a generator, and a meter telling how much power you are producing. Instead of Miles, the judge could sentence them to a certain amount of watt-hours! They pedal harder and faster, their sentence would be done faster! They dog it, they could be there forever.

I think it is a superb idea!

Anyone who hasn't had an opportunity to try one of these gadgets: I'm in fair shape, and can sustain a 60-watt light bulb rather easily for a while. I can create 100-watts with effort, but sustaining anything over that, like the 150-300 to run a computer, is quite impossible for me.
