I've always loved redheads, dated a few in my time, but I ended up with a brunette who has a beautiful redheaded sister. Actually it isn't, red hair is the result of a genetic mutation, caused by having two copies of a recessive gene and only occurs in about 1-2% of the worlds population. Its human nature for us to reject anything that doesn't fit the perceived norm. This is likely to be the reason for some people being negative towards people with red hair. Personally I've dated 2 red heads.

Just about every physical characteristic in the animal kingdom is one kind of mutation or another. For people, attached earlobes, the ability to curl one's tongue, some eye colors, height, etc. Blondes are caused by two recessive genes also. It's not as odd as you try to make it out out be.

I would however use the word rare, and being as only 1-2% of the worlds population are meant to have red hair, this would be a true statement, is it not?
